Outhouse Theatre Co & Seymour Centre present
Consent
by Nina Raine
directed by Craig Baldwin
After a sell-out success at London's National Theatre and a smash hit West End run, Nina Raine's acclaimed play Consent makes its Australian premiere.
Friends Ed and Tim take opposing briefs in a rape case. The key witness is a woman whose life seems a world away from theirs. At home, the barristers' own lives unravel in a frenzy of betrayals and recrimination.
Brought to the stage by the award-winning Outhouse Theatre Co (Ulster American, Heroes of the Fourth Turning, The Flick), this intricately constructed drama pings with questions of consent, not just sexual but personal, probing the murky moral terrain of the courtroom and the marriage bed, and putting Justice herself in the dock.
Also known for her extraordinary 2010 play Tribes, Raine's Consent is rich with ideas and theatrical ingenuity. A work of sparking intelligence, wit, and power that "elevates its writer into the major league of British playwrights" (Variety).
Why is justice blind? Is she impartial? Or is she blinkered?
"POWERFUL. ENJOYABLE AND INTELLIGENT. UNRESERVEDLY RECOMMEND.
- The Independent
"PULLS OFF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS A PLAY CAN DO: IT HELPS US LISTEN IN A NEW WAY."
- The Guardian
"MODERN CLASSICS DON'T COME ALONG VERY OFTEN. 'CONSENT' IS, WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT, JUST THAT.
- Variety
